(2025) Building Literacy: Important in Every Language

The focus of this project was to support literacy growth for all students learning a second language at Glacier Point Middle School Library and other libraries in the district through the purchase of high-interest books in Vietnamese, Arabic, Punjabi, and French. Each year, more students enter school with a native language other than English, and this project supports the belief that literacy development should begin in a student’s primary language.

Each year, more students enter school with a native language other than English, and this project supports the belief that literacy development should begin in a student’s primary language. The grant has allowed the library to significantly expand its multilingual collection, increasing access to culturally and linguistically relevant texts for students. This expansion has been recognized by district and county colleagues, who are exploring ways to replicate the collection in their own libraries. Increased circulation numbers and growing interest in multilingual resources demonstrate the strong need and positive impact of this work. Overall, the project is strengthening student engagement, supporting literacy development, and promoting equity in access to reading materials.
