Cup o’ Java was a classroom-based coffee business developed with extensive student involvement across nearly every aspect of operation. Students participated in marketing research, determined operating hours, designed advertising and a logo, and helped create an accessible prep area, along with developing the menu, researching pricing, and defining job roles. They gained hands-on experience making coffee, selling packaged snacks, managing inventory, stocking shelves, making deliveries to Monte Vista School and other sites, and completing daily accounting and money management tasks. Throughout the process, students discovered and developed a range of skills, including customer service, advertising, communication, and financial literacy, with different students gravitating toward different roles based on their strengths and interests. Overall, Cup o’ Java provided a meaningful real-world learning experience that built confidence, supported career exploration, and served both students and staff as a functional school-based business.
