Mindful Movement Through Yoga
The Mindful Movement Through Yoga project at Riverdale High School introduced students to breath awareness and mindful movement as tools for developing self-awareness and self-management. Initially offered as an after-school enrichment through the extended learning program, the class saw greater engagement when it was brought into the school day through the AVID 11 curriculum.
Students responded enthusiastically—many experiencing yoga for the first time—and participated in sessions during long block periods to reset, refocus, and return to learning with clarity. As part of Student Mental Health Awareness Week, a pop-up session organized in collaboration with the school’s NAMI club gave additional students the opportunity to explore yoga practices. Increased interest following the event suggested that the project’s positive impact would continue, offering lasting benefits for student wellness.
