New Kayaks, New Adventures at Scout Island

A few months ago, 16 brand-new kayaks arrived at the Scout Island Outdoor Education Center, thanks to the generosity of donor Kaye Bonner Cummings. With summer programs now underway, the kayaks are now in full use. Students participating in the program learn more than just how to paddle, they gain essential skills in water safety, teamwork, and communication.

After a safety orientation, students hit the river to practice their kayaking techniques. This hands-on experience not only builds confidence but also fosters a deep appreciation for nature, encourages responsible land stewardship, and promotes lifelong water safety awareness. The students were bursting with excitement as they geared up for the experience, many stepping into a kayak for the very first time.
