Peer Mentoring Group

The Peer Mentoring Group at Benevidez Elementary (Parlier Unified) paired 5th and 6th grade girls with younger students needing support in managing emotions, expressing feelings, and developing social skills. Many of the mentors had previously faced challenges such as peer conflict and self-harm. Through their leadership roles, they found purpose, empowerment, and a renewed sense of responsibility, while making a positive impact on their school community.

During weekly structured sessions, mentees built emotional awareness, learned coping strategies, and experienced a greater sense of belonging. Mentors, in turn, showed significant behavioral improvements, including fewer office referrals and reduced need for counselor support. The Peer Mentoring Group created a safe and supportive space for both mentors and mentees to grow, emotionally, socially, and academically, demonstrating the lasting value of peer connection and student-led support.
