Project Cougar Cave

Cougar Cave has quickly become a beloved tradition on the campus of Clay Joint Elementary School, one that encourages positive behavior and builds a stronger sense of community among students. Designed as an incentive during recess, the program rewards students who demonstrate good behavior with a fun, well-earned break in the Cougar Cave.

Each week, student names are randomly selected by grade level for a chance to attend. Those selected are celebrated in front of their peers and invited to bring a friend, provided that friend has also demonstrated positive behavior. This simple but effective system has led to real change. Students are not only motivated to follow playground expectations, they are also inspired to be kind and supportive to one another. The success of Cougar Cave is reflected in the data: fewer names on the behavior list each year and growing excitement around participation. Students regularly share ideas for what they would like to see in the Cougar Cave, making it a collaborative and evolving space.
