Dr. Floyd B. Buchanan

Dr. Floyd B. “Doc” Buchanan, was born in the Ozark Mountains in Arkansas. He was an exemplary student and an outstanding athlete. After graduating from high school, he put his education on hold to enlist in the U.S. Merchant Marines during World War II and later enlisted in the U.S. Army Medical Corps. Doc returned to college in Denver completing his bachelor’s degree in 1948, followed by his teaching credential and a master’s degree. He continued teaching while he studied for his Doctorate in Education at the University of California at Berkley. In 1957, shortly after receiving his doctorate, Doc accepted the position as Principal/Superintendent for Jefferson Elementary School District in Clovis, serving 31 years as superintendent. Under his visionary leadership Clovis Unified grew into one of the nation’s most successful school districts.
